The Club
The Heart of Texas Miniature Aircraft Club (HOTMAC) was founded in April 1964 by individuals’ interested in building and flying radio controlled model aircraft (RC). The original flying sites were at Cameron Park and James Connally AFB. In 1966 HOTMAC leased the current land in Lake Waco Speegleville Park from the Corps of Engineers. The same year the club membership financed the construction of a 300’ x 80’ paved runway. In 1977 the runway was lengthened to 404’ and in 1999 it was again lengthened to its’ current length of 803’. In 1996 the City of Waco (Parks & Recreation) leased the current 39 acres from the Corps of Engineers and then sub-leased the facility to HOTMAC under a 25 year renewable lease. There are several obligations in the lease with the City. Two of the obligations are to promote tourism in the City of Waco and increase attendance at Lake Waco Reservoir.
HOTMAC is a non-profit organization and is chartered by the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Revenue from annual club dues and special events throughout the year is used to maintain and make improvements to HOTMAC Field. Over the years improvements and maintenance of the runway, the addition of weather shelters, electricity, water, RV outlets and a concession stand put the value of the facility at over $800,000. HOTMAC Field is known throughout the modeling community as one of the finest facilities in the USA.
HOTMAC encourages the public to visit HOTMAC Field at any time to watch the flying and learn more about RC modeling.
